I have 2 kids and placemats are a must. Placemats are used alone at very informal events while tablecloths are used when the event is more formal but can also be used for fun festive informal. But i ve never gotten in the habit of using placemats and find that i really don t miss them. And tablecloths provide more elbow room than placemats and conserve space at a crowded table.

A long tablecloth instantly improves a less than perfect table and adds a note of elegance for a special event like a dinner party. Making a table look beautiful is an art and there are lots of ways to do it. Placing on top of a tablecloth is fine. I have maybe 4 and i don t think i need more.
